Football-lovers, do you still remember Anderson? Yes, this Brazilian player was one of the great talents when he was young. Anderson was predicted to become the world’s best midfielder when playing at Manchester United. He was even predicted to be the successor of Paul Scholes.
His ability as a midfielder is perfect enough – not only good at building attacks but also in defense. Those skills were also recognized by Sir Alex Ferguson when he first saw this young player’s game.
“Anderson is great. That child has something special. There was an urge to immediately recruit him when we first saw his game. Even when we brought him in, he was injured,” said Fergie (Quoted from the Telegraph)
When joining the red devil from FC Porto in 2007, Anderson came with optimism. At that time, he was only 19 years old but was carried off with a quite fantastic cost, which was 20 million pounds or around Rp. 300 billion.
With FC Porto, Anderson performed nicely, although, in the 2006/07 season, he experienced a bitter event, when the tackle of Benfica’s Kostas Katsouranis broke his leg. The injury caused him to be absent for five months. During one and a half seasons, he only played in 25 matches and scored 3 goals.
Anderson’s name has been attracting attention since 2005 when he defended the Brazilian national team at the U-17 world cup event which took place in Peru. Appearing impressive by bringing the Samba team to finish as runner up, Anderson became the tournament’s best player.
Together with MU, Anderson became one of the young players who managed to penetrate the starting XI Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad in his first season. The season lasted beautifully by playing 38 matches and winning double winners, the English Premier League and the Champions League.
Although passing through his first season without scoring even one goal, he certainly will not forget his contribution to the 2008 Champions League final. Anderson was one of the players who successfully became the executor of a penalty shootout against Chelsea in the final held at the Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow.
Anderson’s potential on the pitch also made him rewarded with the Golden Boy 2008 award. This award has also been won by players like Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi, Cesc Fregregas, Paul Pogba, and Kylian Mbappe.
This midfielder, who made his professional debut at the age of 16 with Gremio, again became Ferguson’s top choice in the following season. But unfortunately, Anderson has not been able to make a goal for Manchester United.
In the following seasons, along with the injuries he suffered, Anderson began to lose his place in the midfield of the red devil. And in September 2009, he only scored his first goal for Manchester United in the Premier League when he won over Tottenham Hotspur with a score of 3-1.
The quality that Anderson showed was increasingly declining. He was no longer able to show his bright skills as before. He has lost his sweet touch which led him to fail in competing at Manchester United’s midfield.
During approximately 7 seasons defending the Red Devils, in total, he only appeared 181 times in all competitions and scored 9 goals. Indeed, the Premier League title, the League Cup title, the Club World Cup trophy, and the Champions League title were achieved by MU. But Anderson did not show much of his role when Man United won those titles.
Several factors caused Anderson unable to compete at Manchester United. Besides his frequent injuries, Anderson also has problems with his lifestyle.
Anderson is reportedly fond of nightlife and uncontrolled in maintaining eating patterns. One morning in August 2010, Anderson had a car accident in Portugal, after attending an all-night party at a club called Sardinha Biba.
Besides, Patrice Evra in a conversation with Rio Ferdinand, also said that he had brought Anderson’s burger at one o’clock in the morning.
After Ferguson’s departure in 2013, Anderson’s role in this middle began to fade and could even be said to end. This was because David Moyes entrusted more to the ability of other midfielders than Anderson, plus his injuries often recurred.
Anderson also decided to join Fiorentina on loan. At Fiorentina, Anderson was also unable to compete much. He warmed the bench more and only appeared seven times. At the end of the season, Anderson was returned to Manchester United.
In the 2015/16 season, upon returning to Old Trafford, Anderson was not also the first choice of coach Louis van Gaal. He was only allowed to appear twice, before finally deciding to return home to Brazil to defend Internacional.
His departure to Internacional made Anderson seemed to be swallowed by the earth. The news about him was rarely heard by the public as he was exiled to Brazil. After he had joined Internacional, a shocking incident about Anderson getting involved in a fight appeared.
He made a fuss with his teammate, Willian, in an Internacional training session. It was not clear what had caused the fight, suddenly the two players involved in a fight. The incident was caught on camera and finally spread on the internet.
Anderson later revealed to the public that hurricane injuries were a major factor in the destruction of his career at Manchester United. The statement came after Anderson determined to leave Old Trafford and join Internacional.
“I have played for eight years for Manchester. I want to thank the club because in the first four years I have won everything. The Champions League, the Premier League and the Club World Cup between clubs,” Anderson said
“I have a knee injury and go back to playing on the pitch too fast. This makes my knee hurt again,” he explained.
Living in his native country failed to give Anderson the motivation he needed. Internacional was even infected with bad luck. The club was relegated for the first time in the history of their participation in the top caste of Brazilian football competition. During his time at Internacional, Anderson had appeared 88 times and scored 6 goals.
Anderson then joined another Brazilian club, Coritiba, on loan in 2017. However, again, he was relegated along with his club. Coritiba became the third club he brought to the brink of relegation after Internacional and his youth club, Gremio.
In January 2018, Internacional terminated Anderson’s contract. Since then, due to his physical condition which was getting worse, Anderson was left with no club for six months.
Until July 2018, Turkey’s second division club, Adana Demirspor, became Anderson’s next port. Playing in the Turkish league, Anderson only appeared in 15 matches. In September 2019, he decided to hang up his shoes when he was still 31 years old.
